EARLY TANG DYNASTY, 7TH-8TH CENTURY
Shown standing foursquare, the head well modelled with open mouth, flared nostrils and expressive eyes below the pricked ears, the gracefully arched neck grooved and carved on one side to suggest the combed mane, covered with a white pigment and with traces of black, red and pink pigments

Lot Essay

A similar painted grey pottery horse of smaller size (55 cm. high) with removable saddle is illustrated in the catalogue of the exhibition, Art D'Extreme Orient, Jacques Barrere, Paris, 20 September - 30 October 1991, pp. 50 and 51. See, also, the similar pair of painted grey pottery horses of slightly smaller size (72.3 cm. high), one of which is covered with a white pigment, sold in these rooms, 21 September 2004, lot 197.

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. C101w86 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
