A White-Laced Suit of Armor
Edo period (18th century)
The do maru constructed of leather hon kozane lacquered black and laced entirely in white with the bottom lames of each component trimmed in black animal fur, comprising: a sixty-two plate suji bachi lacquered black with each of the standing ridges lacquered gold, the top of the bowl mounted with a four-stage chrysanthemum tehen kanamono and the front and back adorned with shinodare with standing rivets, the peak decorated with stencilled leather and copper metal edging, the large turnbacks applied with stenciled leather and gilt-copper family crests; the iron facemask lacquered black and decorated with gilt-copper teeth and red-lacquer lips and nostrils and applied with a moustache, fitted with a three-lame throat guard; the do laced in sugake style and decorated on the muna ita and oshitsuke ita with stenciled leather and fitted with two rings on the front, seven sections of five-lame tassets, the shoulder straps protected by gyoyo decorated with stenciled leather and gilt-copper family crests; o-sode decorated to match the turnbacks; tsutsu gote sleeves with gilt-copper hinges on the forearm plates carved as butterflies; leather haidate; splint shin guards and animal fur boots; two wood storage boxes
