A Blue-Laced Suit of Armor
Edo period (17th-18th century)
Ni-mai nuinobe do lacquered black with fundame edges around the arm holes and laced in blue with; a thirty-two plate russet-iron suji bachi fitted on the top of the bowl with a four-stage gold and shakudo chrysanthemum tehen kanamono, the helmet lacquered on the turnbacks in black and applied with a gold gold circular crest of the Kato family, the turnbacks trimmed with gilt-copper fukurin, the helmet peak with shakudo fukurin; helmet bowl fitted with a four-lame neck guard of solid plates, lacquered black, the front of the helmet mounted with a circular silver Kato family crest maedate with a shakudo rim and a kuwagata dai carved with floral scroll and dragons and kuwagata; the facemask lacquered russet red, applied with a moustache and chin tuft, with a four-lame solid-plate throat guard; the do fitted with seven sections of five-lame solid-plate tassets and with a utility pouch, the straps protected with gyoyo applied with stenciled leather and gold Kato family crests; back of the do with a bracket for a flag; shoulder guards chu-sode; sleeves with splint plates on the forearms; thigh guards hon kozane lacquered with the Kato family crest in gold; splint shin guards; two wood storage boxes with leather covers decorated with gilt Kato family crests
