3 volumes, 12o (177 x 104 mm). (Lacking half-titles and advertisement leaf in vol. 3.) Contemporary sprinkled calf by Gilmour of Salsbury with binder's label in vol. 3, covers with gilt roll-tool borders (spines rebacked preserving original gilt backstrips, some wear to joints and spines). Provenance: Lansdowne (bookplate in each volume).
FIRST EDITION. Mansfield Park was composed at Chawton between February 1811 and June 1813, and published in May of the following year in a relatively small edition of perhaps 1250 copies, priced at 18 shillings in boards. This was on a commission basis, Jane Austen retaining the copyright to the work which was sold out by November. Volumes I-II, printed by Sidney, are in Pica roman by Vincent Figgins, of probably ca. 1798; volume II was printed by Roworth in a Caslon Pica roman. Gilson A6; Keynes p. 11; Sadleir I, 62c. (3)
