As the Dutch and Belgian artists who participated in this series were amongst the leading artists of their time, it is tempting to imagine that these delicate miniatures must have been painted for a noble or even royal patron. A few decades after the execution of the present series, leading artists of the time painted similar miniature panels to present as a jubilee gift to the Dutch King Willem III (see E. Fleurbaay (ed.), Koning Willem III en Arti: een kunstenaarsvereniging en haar beschermheer in de 19de eeuw, Amsterdam, 1984).
