Lot Essay

Vittorio Matteo Corcos was born in October 1859 in Livorno, Italy, and lived his artistic life between Florence, Naples and Paris. While he is also well-known for his paintings of contemporary life, he was a popular portraitist, moving in the higher èchelons of European society. This portrait of Queen Maria José is a fine example of how he captured the sophistication and beauty of many of his female sitters, earning him the title of le peintre des jolies femmes. Painted in 1931, just two years before Corcos death, this picture reveals how the artist had fully refined his sensitivity for characterisation.
