Lot Essay

Raúl Anguiano declared that his painting was based on expressive forms taken from reality. Such an "expressive reality" is achieved through allusions to the mythical past of indiginous cultures-- a quality found in Anguiano's compositions. Illustrating this theme are the two versions of La espina. The first, currently in the collection of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, is a mirror image of the work presented here. Painted some years apart, both works recollect the "Poetic Realism" associated with the artist's most popular period.
