Lot Essay

This is as much a portrait as a fashion document: Newton styled his picture and posed his subject in ways that emphasize her strong personality. Paloma's slicked-back hair, big bracelets and dress worn à l'Amazone contribute to the dynamic impact of a picture that is among Newton's best-known images. This print has the high gloss surface achieved by drying it with the emulsion in direct contact with the glazing drum. This was a finish favoured by Newton in the mid-1970s but not used after this period. The print was most likely made by Roger at Publimod.
