Lot Essay

Lilli originated from a comic strip designed by Reinhard Beuthien in the German Newspaper Bild Zeitung. The design for the Bild Lilli doll was undertaken by Max Weissbrodt for the German firm Hausser Elastolin. The first Bild Lilli appeared on the German market on August 12, 1955. While on vacation in Switzerland, Ruth Handler bought a Bild Lilli and Mattel subsequently acquired the patent and rights.
