Lot Essay

This double portrait depicts Duncan Grant, seated on the left, and his and Vanessa Bell's daughter Angelica, on the right. Angelica was born on Christmas Day 1918, and was twenty-two years old in 1940, when the painting was executed, two years before she married the writer David Garnett.
