Lot Essay

Buff at Midnight dates from 1959, the year that the Tate Gallery and the Contemporary Art Society purchased works by Hilton. In that year he was also a prizewinner at the John Moores Liverpool exhibition and he was selected for the British Council travelling exhibition to Canada and the United States, as well as two further British Council exhibitions to Mexico and Australia.
