2 parts in one volume, 2° (530 x 340mm). Title printed in red and black, woodcut initials, head and tail-pieces, 52 double-page engraved maps only (of 54, without charts 53 and 54), 2 folding, 5 engraved diagrams tipped in. (Some light staining mostly to margins). Contemporary red morocco, gilt covers with elaborate roll tool borders incorporating floral and crown tools, central floral arabesques. Spine in eight sections, raised bands, lettered in one, others with floral and crown motif. (Edges scuffed and bumped, morocco torn with small loss on lower cover). Provenance: John Clevland (18th century book label).
An attractive copy of this important English overview of world trade, just as British trading power around the world began to develop. The second part comprises a coasting pilot for mariners with fine charts of most trading areas of the world. This copy belonged to John Clevland (1707-1763), MP for Saltash and Sandwich, Joint Secretary of the Admiralty from 1746, and sole Secretary from 1751, later Secretary of Greenwich Hospital. His father William Clevland (d. 1735) served under Sir Clandesley Shovel and was Comptroller of the Navy's accounts.
