These armchairs correspond to an idea first developed by Ruhlmann in the form of a sketch elevation, one of a number of preliminary designs for furniture published in 1917-18. Contemporary photographs show various versions of the design incorporated in interior schemes including the ground floor of L'Hôtel Ruhlmann from 1923-24 and in the Games Room on the liner Île-de-France of 1927.

The present pair are from a set of four acquired by Paris gallery L'Arc en Seine from an old Paris collection. One pair was sold to a US client, the other to Dakis Joannou.
