CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881). Four autograph letters signed, to 'Dear Maurice', 'Dear Mrs Stanley', two to unidentified recipients ('Dear Sir' and 'Dear Lady' [Lady Augusta Stanley]), Chelsea and n.p. (one), 8 July 1863 - 18 January 1870 and n.d. (two), together 10 pages, 12mo and 8vo (remnants of guards).
An undated letter to 'Dear Maurice' [evidently a connection of the Stanleys of Alderley], declines to review a book ('Alas, the No is always likelier than the Yes, in this world, with regard to such things'), adding that in any case 'My reviewing hand is greatly out at present, and the Westminster Review, except that they keep occasionally dunning me for articles is a thing I hardly touch with a pair of tongs', adding greetings for the Stanleys, and announcing that he has 'lost Stanley's Note somewhere in the Paper Chaos that is welling round me on all sides up to the chin'. On 8 July 1863, Carlyle invites the recipient for tea and a walk 'under the cool nocturnal skies, as my habit is', and discusses the prospects of two churchmen. A letter to 'Mrs Stanley' accepts an invitation with pleasure, 'if some Demon do not snatch me in the interim'; but on 18 January 1870 Carlyle writes to Lady Augusta Stanley in poor spirits: 'I am far too low and dark for the bright adventure you propose to me; nothing suits at present but silence, and even that not well'.
