The burnt-orange field with scrolling acanthus and flower-filled cornucopiae around an over-sized central moulded laurel-wreath roundel surrounding a central pink rosette centrepiece, in a panelled border containing individual flowerheads between lilac flowerhead minor stripes and a golden moulded leaf outer stripe, full pile throughout, slightly dry wefts with associated scattered small splits and light surface stains

Lot Essay

The model for this carpet is taken from a late 18th century design which was woven at Axminster a number of times in different sizes. This is very close indeed to the example formerly in Devonshire House, London (Bertram Jacobs: Axminster Carpets 1755-1957, Leigh-on-Sea, 1970, pl. 3).
