Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the German mytholigical beings Wotan and Brünnhilde, the protagonists of the opera Die Walküre by Richard Wagner (1813-1882). Wagners music inspired Leeke to a series of paintings which were commissioned by Wagners son Siegfried. Brünnhilde, who was Wotans favourite daughter, disobeys her father and to punish her, he berefts her of her immortality and puts her in a long sleep. The moment of farewell between the god and his daughter is shown here.
