CIRCA 1830, ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS MESSENGER AND SONS, THE FITTING STAMPED 'HINKS AND SONS, PATENT'
Of monumental proportions, each with foliate finial above a satyr-mask handled campana vase with bacchic frieze, the stiff-leaf shaft issuing two foliate branches with glass reservoirs and burners, the whole supported by three female caryatid figures, on foliate monopodiae and concave-fronted triangular pinth, with gadrooned weighted socle and bun feet, stamped to the mechanism 'Hinks's No. 2 duplex', one glass bowl cracked

Lot Essay

Thomas Messenger, Birmingham manufacturer of 'Chandeliers, Tripods and Lamps of every description in bronze and or-molu', opened a London branch in 1826 (E. Moncrieff, 'Argand Lamps', Antique Collector, February 1990, p. 47). A Colza Oil lamp of this identical model is illustrated and discussed in 'Country House Lighting', Exhibition Catalogue, Temple Newsam, 992, p.138, fig.92. A pair of their colza-oil candelabra was sold anonymously, Christie's London, 30 November 2000, lot 8.
