The Essex first appeared in 1919 as a cheap running mate for the Hudson. Up to 1923 it was a 2.9 litre 'four' with overhead inlet valves, this being replaced in 1924 by a 2.1 litre six cylinder unit and then continued up to 1931. By 1929 when this car was built, the engine size had been increased by a slightly longer stroke to give 2.4 litres, but very little else had changed and options available were still limited just to bumpers and leather upholstery.
TP 7762 would have originally been put on the road in Portsmouth, as confirmed by its registration prefix, and was so registered on 20th April 1929. Beyond this date its history is not known to the Sharpe family, but by 1962, when the continuation log book that it retains was issued, it was in Deal in Kent and owned by Alexander Harrison. From Mr Harrison the car passed to Peter Macey of Maidstone, then Leonard Potts, in 1964 before joining the Sharpe Family Collection where it has resided for the last four decades.
The Essex is in fair, but generally scruffy order and very much looks its age, it may have had some restoration work undertaken over the years but certainly nothing recent is evident. It is accompanied by a modern V5 document and old log book and has been run recently.
