By the time this Type AL De Dion Bouton was made, the company had been in the business of making motor vehicles for 23 years. As evidenced elsewhere in the catalogue, easy to manage and reliable single-cylinder cars were introduced before the turn of the century; twin-cylinder versions came on the scene in 1903 and fours were available by 1905. De Dion Boutons were exported world-wide and the firm's products enjoyed a reputation that was second to none.

The 1907 season was a transitional year as De Dion Bouton moved forwards in two notable respects, from tube chassis to straight sided steel chassis and to an above chassis radiator with header tank and surround instead of the former below chassis radiator. In all they offered six models, which consisted of 8hp, short and long chassis 10hp and 18hp variants together with a large 30 hp. The latter three chassis were all four cylinder designs, but the appeal of the De Dion origins was evident in that it continued to produce single cylinder models alongside these, and would do so until 1912.

This car adheres to the final tube chassis 8hp specifications of 1906, and as such would have been an AL model, but has formerly been dated by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain with dating number 150 as being 1907. It is perfectly possible that there were still a few tube chassis De Dions for sale by 1907. As designated by its registration number the car would have originally been supplied in East Sussex, and is last recorded by the V.C. C. as having been with M.H. Gamble, prior to acquisition for by the Sharpe Family.

The car is in need of sympathetic restoration, but is predominantly complete and as such is an unusual surviving example of these later De Dions. Once on the road again, it would make a perfect entry for the single and twin cylinder rallies of the Veteran Car Club.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
