1964 FORD ZODIAC Mk III FOUR DOOR SALOON

The Mk III Zodiac of 1962 is the third and penultimate evolution of the range that was first introduced in 1954. Back in those still-austere post-War days, Ford was seeking to top its family saloon range using the materials available, and so the Zephyr received an extra three horsepower (achieved through raising the compression ratio) and two-tone paint with whitewall tyres, transforming it into the Zodiac. By 1962 and the third edition of the Zephyr Zodiac range, the top-end model was even more distinct, with quad-headlamps dominating the more sumptuous grill and six-light styling that lent a grander sense of space to the interior, as well as making the top-of-the-range model more recognisable to the passer-by. Both shared popular modifications over their predecessors including the latest all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, and power-assisted brakes as standard (discs on the front, drums on the back). The Zodiac's performance was now appreciably better, however, with better acceleration and a higher top speed than even the six cylinder version of the Zephyr: the 0-50mph dash was now dispatched in ten seconds flat, and it was Ford's first model capable of the magic ton.
This car has again been residing in a barn for the last two and a half decades. Its dark green paintwork is largely original although it does bear evidence of some 'patchy' repairs. There is evidence of rust on the sills, and the chromework is in need of replacement. The grey-green interior, although original, shows wear consistent with the 45,498 miles displayed on the odometer. The last tax disc is still displayed in the windscreen, issued from Southend and expired in February 1976, and it is fair to assume that the car has not been driven since this time. It is sold without documentation.
