1950 FORD PREFECT E493A FOUR DOOR SALOON
Registration No. LPW 883
Chassis No. C563807
Engine No. C563807
Black with tan interior.
Engine: four cylinders in line, side valves, 1,172cc, 36bhp at 4,400rpm: Gearbox: three speed manual; Suspension: front, coil springs, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: mechanically operated drums all round. Right hand drive.
The Prefect was the Anglia's bigger brother; introduced in 1939 as a replacement for the aged 10hp model, it had the same overall dimensions as the Anglia but used a wheelbase four inches longer to accommodate the two rear doors. The Prefect also used a larger and more powerful engine to cope with the extra bodywork as well as the intended passengers. Production continued after the War's interruption, and a makeover followed in 1948 for both models. Like its smaller sibling, the changes made to the Prefect were aesthetic rather than mechanical, the main difference being the incorporation of the headlights into the new car's wings set off by a new grill between them. Production continued until 1953's shake-up, with over 192,000 E493As being produced in these five years.
The car included in today's sale is a good solid example of the model, although it has not withstood storage quite as well as other of its stable mates. The rear window has become dislodged, for example, although it is still with the car, unlike the speedometer which has unfortunately fallen victim to thieves while the car was stored. Apart from this, the car's original black paintwork is still in good condition while the tan interior is also original and also in good overall condition. Originally registered on 14.th of October 1950, this car is sold with its original buff logbook and a modern V5.
