1965 FORD ZODIAC MK III FOUR-DOOR SALOON
Registration No. EKP 342C
Chassis No. BA646G12653
White with black interior.
Engine: six cylinders in line, overhead valves, c. 85bhp at 4,400rpm, 2,553cc; Gearbox: three-speed manual with overdrive; Suspension: front, independent wishbones, rear, beam axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: discs to the front, drums to the rear. Right-hand drive.
Based on the six-cylinder Zephyr, Ford launched the first edition of the Zodiac in 1954 as an upmarket leader of its range. Boasting leather, armrests, and a radio, it sold in solid numbers, as did its Mk II successor which, introduced in 1956, featured updated (and slightly Americanised) styling as well as two-tone paint and more interior space. The Mk III was announced in 1962, but this time the Zodiac differed substantially, in looks at least, from its Zephyr sister. The two cars shared what was essentially the same floor pan and running gear, but the Zodiac was distinguished by a unique bodyshell which featured four headlamps in a full-width grille, different rear doors, and increased glass area thanks to the new three-quarter lights behind the doors.
Again it sold in solid numbers; this example is one of over 77,700 that were produced between 1962 and 1966. While the white paintwork has been renewed and shows evidence of some filler, it is described as being in "presentable" condition. The black vinyl interior, however, looks to be original and is in very good overall condition. The car was donated to the museum in December 2004 by an elderly family who had used it until that point. It is said to run well but the car is sold without documentation.
