Mid-19th-century MOSAIC BINDING BY FRANçOIS CAPé: gold-tooled citron morocco, covers and spine inlaid with black morocco to a Renaissance strapwork design, green morocco doublures gold-tooled to a 17th-century design, gilt edges. Green morocco pull-off case. Provenance: Claude Guérin (7 December 1990 Paris sale, lot 104).
First use of Didot's caractères microscopiques. "C'est un chef-d'oeuvre de gravure, et la perfection de la fonte de ce caractère, qui n'a que de deux points et demi, est due au moule polyamatype de l'invention de M. Henri Didot" (Ambroise Firmin-Didot, Essai sur la typographie col. 872). A Jammes, Les Didot 68. Capé's miniature binding is a masterpiece of fine technique and was undoubtedly finished by the leading Parisian doreur of the period, Marius Michel père.
