"Round the World." Letters from Japan, China, India, and Egypt. By Wm. Perry Fogg. Cleveland, Ohio: 1872. 2pp. errata. 11 unmounted albumen-print photographs (including the portrait frontispiece). (Frontispiece, portrait of Brigham Young and two other plates with tears, and creases.) Original brown half morocco gilt, the upper cover blocked with large centrally-placed gilt globe, spine in five compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second, third and fourth compartments, the others with repeat decoration in blind (extremities scuffed). Provenance: Dr. W.P. Horton, Cleveland, Ohio (author's presentation inscription on title, ownership inscription on front free endpaper).
A FASCINATING AND LIVELY TRAVEL ACCOUNT, CONCENTRATING ON JAPAN, CHINA AND INDIA, AND ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS. Fogg travelled by train from Cleveland to San Francisco, via Salt Lake City, where he interviewed Brigham Young and describes the Mormon sights. He took a Pacific Mail Steamer from San Francisco to Japan. He describes Japan in some detail and is in the main impressed by what he sees, he then visits China (including Hong Kong), Singapore, Malacca and Penang. He then travels on to India before travelling from Bombay to Suez, and thence via the newly completed canal to Cairo and the Pyramids. There are a total of 28 photographs, but ten of these are of engravings (nos.10, 16-22, 24 and 27). The remaining 18 are all taken from life and form a fascinating group: 1. portrait of the author; 2. portrait of Brigham Young; 3.'Mt. Starr King Yosemite'; 4. 'Japanese Village'; 5. 'Group of Japanese Officers'; 6. 'Bronze Statue of Buddha'; 7. 'The Original "Grecian Bend"'; 8. 'Mother and Child'; 9.
