Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the bark Juno, which was built in 1842. It is noteworthy that there are two captains flags visible which is rarely seen. Other watercolours and drawings of this vessel are kept at the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam, amongst them a work by Jacob Spin and a pencil drawing showing the Juno on the river Maas as part of the fleet commanded by Prins Hendrik in 1847, the year in which the present lot was executed. In 1852, as the bark made its way from Banjouwangi to Dordrecht it was sunk.
