Edo period (19th century)
The rectangular box with rounded edges and a hinged cover opening to reveal a removable tray, the front of the box fitted with a drawer, all designed in gold, silver, red and black takamaki-e and gold, red and black hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground with embellishments of kirigane, aogai, hirame and gold foil, decorated on the cover with Otani Koinosuke killing a wild boar beside a stream, a mountain in the distance, the sides lacquered with large carp in crashing waves, the underside of the cover decorated with two poem cards with flying cranes and eggplants, bamboo shoots and tuberous plants on a nashiji ground with phoenix and flowers in gold lacquer, the removable tray with a large sea bream, an abalone, plum blossoms and nanden berries on a nashiji ground, the edges edges all lacqured fundame, the hardware gilt-copper; the stand set on cabriole legs and lacquered with geometric and wave patterns, clouds and keyfrets, lozenges containing cherry blossoms and scrolling vines in gold and silver hiramaki-e, the ground nashiji
