Standing in alidhasana over a raised lotus base, his right hand raised upward, his left holding the tail of a serpent, wearing a dhoti, bracelets, anklets and necklace, his face with animated expression and furrowed brows, his long locks falling to his shoulders, with a two-line Newari inscription on the base

Lot Essay

The inscription on this wood carving suggests that this is a depiction of the god Bhimsen, a Nepalese deity beloved by merchants and renowned for his great strength as a wrestler. The inscription bears a samvat date of 884, corresponding to the year 1764 AD.
