Lot Essay

This ship was designed by t munro glass in 1936/7. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he was called up for service and the SM was commandeered by the Royal Navy, wth glass as skipper. She performed great service at Dunkirk and afterwards became part of the Thames Estuary and River Patrol. In the late summer of 1940 Churchill expressed a wish to spend a day on board her to observe exactly what functions this patrol was carrying out and when asked to write his signature on the paneoled bulkhead, he duly did so. When the SM was eventually sold Muro Glass cut out this piece of panelling and had it framed.
