Lot Essay

This was the image used by Churchill for his 1951 election address. It was taken by "Vivienne" (Mrs. Florence Entwistle), who said of the sitting: "I took eight shots" she recalled, "then he said suddenly, 'I must go'." She pleaded for just one more, he agreed -- and that was the one." She went on to photograph five other Prime Ministers, including Attlee, Macmillan and Harold Wilson.
