Photogravure frontispiece portrait of Ewart Grogan, half tone plates and illustrations by A. D. McCormick, 2 folding maps printed in colours, 2-pages of publisher's advertisements at end (some spotting and staining, maps torn without loss). Original pictoiral cloth (rubbed and scuffed, inner hinges weak). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, the half title inscribed, "Garth Williams, from the author, another Jesus Cambridge man. Ewart Grogan." A pencil inscription in another hands adds: "Signed by 'Grogs' aged 91 in Nairobi, Kenya. He died in Cape Town 1967. He was very blind & deaf towards the end of his life. Garth Williams FRCS, Nairobi 1968." Provenance: "To the Rev. Canon Garrick, from M. G. Stanford" (additional inscription dated 1900 on half title). A loosely-inserted letter dated 1965, signed "Camilla", describes the difficulty of getting Ewart Grogan to sign the book.
