Lot Essay

Franz-Stephan von Lothringen (1708-1765), future husband of Maria Teresa of Austia, was raised in the court of Emperor Karl IV. In 1729 he became Duke of Lothringen, relinquishing his title to Satnislaus Leszczynski (son-in-law of Louis XV) in 1735 under pressure from France. In 1736 he married Maria Teresa, becoming co-regent of the Hapsburg territories and, one year later, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1745 he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor.
