Lot Essay

The delicate, fringed poppies on their pale green, spikey leaves are a significant movement away from the bold, iconic floral motifs of the 17th century towards a more reflective, restrained and elegant style of Mughal drawing. Whilst still influenced by 17th century herbalist albums aintings, the drawing here, particularly in the fillings and in the architectural elements is moving towards the sprig motifs that would dominate the second half of the 18th century in many different materials and works of art.
