Lot Essay

La Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore is Andrea Palladio's (1508-1580) most famous structure in Venice which is located on the island of S. Giorgio, opposite S. Mark's Square. Begun in 1562, the facade of the Benedictine monastery was built with white Istrian stone, a marble found near Trieste, and adorned with sculptural decoration. However, from the position Cheney painted this view, from the Redentore, we can also see the luminescent red brick of the church bathed in sunlight.
