Lot Essay

This detailed interior scene reveals Schröder as a devoted follower of the Dutch Genre tradition. Schröder uses the light flooding in from the window to highlight interior accessories such as the plate on the mantle-piece, and the silver-ware upon the stool, creating a light and airy atmosphere in which to set his game of dice. This attention to detail is extended to the Seventeenth century costume, where shows his skill at creating a sense of texture. We see the figures of four men; two at play, with the others observing the game with interest. Schröder has taken the opportunity to depict four very different figures, giving the picture a sense of variety to complement the serene interior.
