BOETHIUS, Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus (c.480-c.524). De consolatione philosophiae, with commentary ascribed in the text to Thomas Aquinas. - Compendiosa consolationis resumptio. Deventer: Jacobus de Breda, 19 March 1491.
Chancery 4° (204 x 142mm). Collation: \Kp\k6 a8 b-r6 s4 t-z6 \\m6 A-D6 (\Kp\k1r title, \Kp\k1v table, a1r text with commentary surround, D1r Compendiosa, D6r colophon, D6v blank). 174 leaves. 46 lines of commentary and headline. Type: 3:180G, 4:80G, 5:64G, 6:102G. 2- to 9-line initials in red, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. (First leaf remargined, lower blank section of final leaf replaced, very light marginal dampstain towards end, slight damage to first few corners.) 17th-century half red-stained leather, slightly later paper spine label (a little worn). Provenance: early inscription washed from title -- E.B. Pusey (gift inscription from J.L. Galton); Oxford, Pusey House.
Printed by the second printer at Deventer. De Breda seems to have stepped into the void left by Deventer's first printer, Richard Pafraet, when he suspended printing in 1485-87, taking over some of Pafraet's type material. The two men worked simultaneously from 1489 as the only Deventer printers, producing between them almost one-quarter of the total number of Netherlandish editions in the 15th century. Despite this prolification, Deventer incunables are not common on the market. With variant "consosolatione" on D1r, line 3, as Polain and Bodleian. C 1111; GW 4552; BMC IX, 67 (IA. 47817); Bod. Inc. B-399; Goff B-794.
