'Au premier janvier mil huit [cent] quarante-sept je paierai à M[onsieur] Porée ou à son ordre la somme de cent cinquante francs'. Baudelaire promises to pay his tailor the cost of goods received.
A note for his tailor, and a rare example of Baudelaire's adding the surname of his maternal grandfather to his signature. Charles Defayis, said to have been a soldier and to have died at Quiberon in 1795, is also recorded as Dufaÿs and Du Fays. Baudelaire alternated between cultivating the appearance of a dandy and that of a bohemian. During the winter of 1846-47 he was entreating his mother to authorise Narcisse-Desiré Ancelle, the conseil judiciaire appointed to control his chaotic financial affairs in 1844, to advance him money for medicines (for the treatment of his syphilis) and asking for advances from the Societé des Gens de Lettres (for novellas and projected works). In fact the endorsements to this IOU indicate that it was not repaid until some five years after Baudelaire's death, and five months after that of his mother. The address at 7 rue Tournon is given only in the present document and was probably the small rented apartment to which he had referred in a letter to his mother the previous October.
