BEDE, the Venerable (Saint, 673-735). The history of the Church of England. Translated from Latin into English by Thomas Stapleton (1535-98). Antwerp: John Laet, 1565.
4° (188 x 138mm). Printer's device on title, woodcut Tudor arms on title verso, two full-page and one half-page woodcut, possibly by Arnaud Nicolai, woodcut foliate initials. 19th-century half russia (front hinge repaired, a little worn at extremities). Provenance: Montanus, 1602 -- SIR ROGER TWYSDEN, 1648 (1597-1672) -- Sir John Saunders Sebright (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. As a leading Catholic intellectual, Stapleton made this translation (an "enduring contribution to this sparkling collection of [recusant] prose" -DNB) while in self-imposed exile on the Continent. The book was prohibited in England as traiterous. This volume was formerly owned by the antiquary Roger Twysden. Having been caught up in civil war strife, Twysden finally retired to his seat, Roydon Hall, and devoted himself to his study and writings, particularly on early English histories and monasticism. His collection passed to Sir John Sebright, who sold the main portion at auction in 1807. Allison & Rogers 82; Pforzheimer 55; STC 1778.
