KEATS, John (1795-1821). Endymion: A Poetic Romance. London: T. Miller for Taylor and Hessey, 1818.
8° (219 x 138mm). Half-title. (Some gatherings a little spotted, without the 2 leaves of advertisements that MacGillivray notes are 'sometimes found at the end' and are recorded by Haywood but not by Wise.) Early 20th-century maroon crushed morocco gilt, top edge gilt (extremities lightly rubbed, boards slightly warped). Provenance: Oliver Locker-Lampson (1880-1954, gift to:) -- Frederick Edwin Smith, Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930, presentation inscription on flyleaf 'For F.E. Smith from Oliver Locker-Lampson just before my return to Russia Dec. 1916'; armorial bookplate as Viscount Birkenhead) -- William Alfred Westropp Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey (1885-1963, bookplate; sale, Christie's, 11-13 July 2000, lot 690).
FIRST EDITION. THE BIRKENHEAD-FOYLE COPY. This copy appears to be an intermediate issue, which bears the later-issue cancellans half-title [A]1 bearing the imprint 'T.Miller, Printer' on the verso, but retains the first-issue erratum leaf with one correction (rather than the later-issue errata leaf which listed 5 corrections); however, Haywood (citing Keats's letters) states that, 'both the one-line erratum and the five-line errata were printed off before the book was published'. The present copy was a gift from the naval commander and member of parliament Oliver Locker-Lampson (the son of the poet and bibliophile Frederick Locker-Lampson) to his fellow MP and friend of Churchill, the celebrated lawyer and politician F.E. Smith. Wise Ashley Library III, p. 13; Hayward 232; MacGillivray 2.
