The English Bible. Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1903-5 -- [Incipit:] 'In the beginning ...' [Hammersmith: The Doves Press, c. 1900.] Oblong broadsheet (166 x 237). Printed in Doves type in red on paper. Tidcombe Doves Press DPE85.

TWO BIFOLIA PRINTED ON VELLUM FROM THE DOVES PRESS BIBLE, WITH A RARE SETTING OF THE FIRST FOUR LINES. Cobden-Sanderson had planned an edition of the Bible in 1899, and in 1900 he received permission to print Scrivener's edition, and the Doves Bible was advertised in the Press's first List (31 December 1900). The first volume was published in June 1903 and the last in June 1905, and it was immediately applauded as a remarkable achievement. Various settings for the first page of Genesis were printed to send as specimen pages to potential subscribers, and there was an early trial setting made with the first four lines printed in red in upper case, as in the second item here, of which Tidcombe comments, 'this may have been printed about the [same] time as the trial page [...] with these lines in red', suggesting that this leaf (of similar dimensions to most Doves Press advertising material) may have been intended for advertising purposes. Only two copies of The English Bible were printed on vellum, although a third retree copy was subsequently assembled from rejected membranes (these copies are now in the Wormsley, Bridwell, and University of Buffalo libraries), and these two bifolia, which are lightly-inked in areas, are probably overs.
