HERBARIUM VIVUM -- Manuscript herbal, containing 779 drawings of flowers, fruits, grain and other plants. [Germany or Austria: c.1700.]
2 volumes, royal 2° (436 x 300mm). 779 original watercolour drawings on paper, some full page, most 2, 3 or 4 to a page, mixed with a number of blanks, some with manuscript captions in Latin and occasionally in German, some with pasted-on captions with Linnean binomials, making up an album of 1312 pages paginated in an 18th-century hand, Venetian paper watermarked with a triple crescent and counter-marked with a GC connected by clover. (A very few corners torn, occasional marginal dampstain.) 19th-century roan, red morocco labels (rubbed, spotting on spines, lower joint of vol. II starting.) Provenance: K.K. Lyceal Bibliothek, Linz (stamp).
An extensive selection of primarily North European flora, mainly flowering plants, including bulbs and a few tulips, but also including trees, roses, berries, and fruits, gourds, and a few cactuses, mushrooms and sponges. A few of the plants are highlighted with insects: one with a caterpillar, another with a beetle, a handful with a butterfly, and one is shown with a salamander.
