Lot Essay

The present composition appears to be a modello for the signed and dated painting of 1653 by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (oil on canvas, 101 x 83.7 cm.) in a private collection, Milwaukee (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, Landau, 1983, II, p. 730, no. 415 and p. 778, illustrated). The Milwaukee painting has an upright format giving emphasis on the figures, whereas the present work provides more attention to the surroundings, showing a stable with animals.

We are grateful to Professor Werner Sumowski for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency and for suggesting that the present work is a modello for the Milwaukee painting (written communication, 9 June 2005).
