Lot Essay

This picture is taken from the southern bank of the River Thames and gives a panoramic view of Westminster. From left to right, one can see Westminster Abbey; the tower and flagpole of St. Margaret's Church; Westminster Hall, with the twin turrets of the House of Commons emerging above the trees of Cotton and Speakers Gardens immediately in front; and Westminster Bridge, with the Banqueting House and the spire of St. Martin in the Fields beyond.
This view had been painted by Canaletto on his visit to London in 1745 and was subsequently popularised by artists such as Samuel Scott (1702-1772). This picture was executed after the completion of Westminster Bridge in 1746.
