More money was being poured into the industry than ever before and as a result, a more sophisticated product was being created. In 1972, Deep Throat was released and for the first time, an X-rated movie was being shown in mainstream cinemas. 1972 also saw the release of Bertolucci's Last Tango In Paris. Although this was not a porn film per se, it did feature scenes of an unreservedly adult nature. The lines dividing porn from mainstream cinema were becoming blurred. Films like Deep Throat, Behind The Green Door and Emmanuelle were attracting a fashionable, young crowd and it became almost trendy for couples to go and see these films together. Marilyn Chambers remains one of the most renowned porn stars in the history of X-rated cinema. A teen model, she first became known as the cover girl for big-brand names like Pepsi and Ivory Snow soap. She managed to secure a couple of small roles in mainstream movies, however, frustrated by the erratic flow of work, she replied to an advert placed in a newspaper by the legendary Mitchell Brothers. The brothers owned an adult movie theatre in downtown San Francisco and were looking to produce an X-rated film. Marilyn's looks and acting impressed the brothers and she easily landed the part. When Behind The Green Door premièred at Cannes in 1972, it received a standing ovation and the film embodied the 'porno-chic' movement in vogue at that time. The film proved a massive success and eventually grossed over $20 million. The popularity of the movie was helped by the scandal that arose when it was discovered that the innocent mother on the box of Ivory Snow soap sitting in every family home was in fact Marilyn Chambers: The Porn Star.
