Lot Essay

Osthaus frequently painted large canvases, often 45 x 60 inches, for single portraits, painting the dog at near lifesize. He did one painting 6 x 16 feet of the dogs of S. Murray Mitchell of Philadelphia in three panels. Another of his large paintings was a lifesize portrait of W.W. Titus of Mississippi with two famous field trial dogs.
