It is rare to find a box of this small size inscribed with a Yongle reign mark. The composition is exceptionally well rendered. Another Yongle-marked small box of this shape carved with more stylised flowers, was included the exhibition, 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1993, and illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 44.
