Lot Essay

This bear featured in Dean's 1954 catalogue and was the first of their bears to re-use the name 'Tru-to-Life' since the much earlier use of this branding. They were sold with the following advertising slogan 'Life-Like Paws with Nails that do Not Scratch! Life-Like Nose that is Soft and Cold to Touch! Life-Like Limbs by which it is assisted to Walk! Truly a Remarkable Teddy Bear!'. They were produced in gold and honey until 1957. The 'soft and cold' nose was probably made of gutta-percha. In 1956, the better known black version, designed by Sylvia Wilgoss, was introduced.
