Lot Essay
Francis Warre Warre-Cornish (1839-1916), Historian and Biographer, was educated at Eton and then King's College, Cambridge. After achieving a First Class degree in classical studies, he was made a Fellow of King's and returned to Eton as an Assistant Master, being later appointed Vice-Provost of the school. In 1866, he married Blanche Ritchie (d.1923) by whom he had eight children. He was a historian of the English church and wrote a biography of Jane Austen (published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd., 1913).
As a teacher he was more stimulating than inspiring, more critical than enthusiastic .... He is not athletic, but he can fish and read and talk, while he can be quite statesmanlike as a member of the Governing Body of our biggest school... As Vice-Provost he is almost the only lay canon in England.
Vanity Fair, 'Men of the Day', No. 824, 1901.
