Lot Essay
Baron Arthur de Rothschild (1851-1903) was the youngest son of London- born Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812-1870), the founder of the French winemaking branch of the Rothschild family. Arthur was born in Paris and lived on the Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré. He was a historian of the post and postage stamps. He wrote two publications detailing postal taxes, Notice sur l'Origine du Prix Uniforme de la Taxe de Lettres et sur la Création des Timbres de Poste en Angleterre (1871) and Histoire de la Poste aux Lettres (1873). He bought ties by the dozen and altered his neck wear two or three times a day. He was only marginally involved in the Bank. Rothschild was greatly interested in yachting, and for several years was Vice-President of the Union des Yachts Français. He died at Monte Carlo in 1903.
Baron Rothschild's first steam yacht named Eros was built for him by Lobnitz at Renfrew in 1876. Designed and rigged as a screw schooner, she was registered at 314 tons (Thames) and measured 155 feet in length with a 21 foot beam. She lasted until 1884 when the Baron replaced her with another steam yacht of the same name. Designed by A.H. Brown and built by Shuttleworth & Chapman at Erith, the second Eros, another screw schooner constructed of steel, was registered at 617 tons gross (770 Thames) and measured 219.5 feet in length with a 26.5 foot beam.
He is very well-known in Paris, and even more so at Monte Carlo. He owns a beautiful yacht called Eros, upon which he 'does' many parties very well. He is enormously rich; and he is quite partial to the Board of Green Cloth. He is very fond of Art; and he is quite good natured.
