Lot Essay
The attribution of the present drawing was confirmed by Alastair Laing on studying the original.
Mr. Laing dates the drawing to the 1730s, and compares it to two academies exhibited at Stair Sainty Matthiesen (François Boucher: His Circle and Influence, New York, 1987, nos. 28 and 29) and to an unpublished drawing of a seated male academy, signed 'f. boucher', that was with François Heim in the early 1980s. Mr Laing also draws attention to a red chalk Head of shepherd, formerly in the collection of Mr and Mrs Bernard Lande, which shows the same model (R.S. Slatkin, François Boucher in North American Collections, exhib. cat., Washington, National Gallery of Art, and elsewhere, 1973-74, no. 17).
We are grateful for Mr. Laing's kind help in the preparation of this note.
