Lot Essay

Jaime Colson was born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in 1901. He attended art academies in Madrid and in Barcelona and settled in Paris in the 1920s. After a brief period in Mexico (1934-1938) where he befriended José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera, Colson became professor at the art academy in Havanna to teach his "cubismo neo-humanista". Mario Carreno was one of his pupils.
The two paintings by Jaime Colson in this sale are reminiscent to the work "Figurar Metafísicas" from the series "La Catarsis", now in the Museo Bellapart in Santo Domingo.
